05/25: March Against Monsanto
- Details
- Published on Friday, May 17, 2013 10:21
March Against Monsanto New River Valley, VA has announced that on May 25, 2013 over 200 participants will join the international grassroots movement, “March Against Monsanto.” Monsanto is the bio-engineering firm responsible for the infiltration of GMO seeds and crops, worldwide. The National organizer, Tami Monroe Canal, started the movement in an effort to raise awareness of the growing urgency to get genetically modified organisms (GMOs) foods labeled or banned in America, where there are currently no labeling laws. However, GMO labeling is required in 62 countries, according to Strom, The New York Times. Senator Chase of Washington State claims, “The Grocery Manufacturers Association estimates that between 75 to 80 percent of all processed foods available on grocery store shelves contain GMOs.”
Author, Karen Clark Nagy, says she was inspired to lead the march because “I feel it is critical to do my part to share information about the dangers of GMOs in a peaceful manner.” The sponsor for the event is Kevin Palmer, owner of Custom T’z, who decided to “help out for the educational opportunity to learn more about GMOs.”
The local march will commence at 2:00 pm at WCC, 1521 South Main Street, Blacksburg, VA, and will feature an educational opportunity for the public to learn more about GMOs. There are over 330 world wide events taking place on May 25, covering six continents and more than 41 countries. The full March Against Monsanto mission statement can be read here.
