A new series of workshops for businesses and individuals will be offered this summer through New River Community College’s Office of Workforce Development in conjunction with the Giles Chamber of Commerce. The courses will take place at the Giles Country Club, 500 Ft. Branch Road in Pearisburg.

It’s amazing how many people in Blacksburg or the New River Valley do not know about their “sleepy” little neighbor just 8 miles down the road off of 460 West. Maybe that’s okay, Newport residents enjoy the peace and beauty of their small community in Giles County. Hosting just a handful of local businesses such as Mikie’s 7th Restaurant, Newport Hardware and Supply, and the good ole SuperValue market on the corner, Newport is not looking to change its rural nature into anything else.

River Ridge Dermatology is growing its practice by opening a new office in Giles County, located at 219 Buchanan Street in Pearisburg. Chad Johnston, River Ridge Dermatology’s lead doctor, will provide medical and surgical dermatology services at the practice’s new location beginning in May. Mundy to Layoff 123

Now some not-so-happy tidings of the season: a company official says 123 employees of Mundy Support Services in Giles County will be laid off by the end of this year, when the company's contract with Celanese expires. Mundy provides maintenance and operations support at the Narrows plant. It is likely that a new contractor will hire many of the 123 people being cut by Mundy, Andy Beard told WDBJ7.

On Stage Apparel in Pearisburg held a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony Dec. 8 with the Giles County Chamber of Commerce. Attending the event along with owner Amanda Moser were Pearisburg Mayor Robert Dickerson, Pearisburg Town Manager Ken Vittum, Chamber Director Cathy Clark and representatives from local pageants.

Pearisburg's Annual Fireman's Parade will be Saturday, October 6th at 7pm. It will begin in front of Food Lion and continue on the traditional parade route. Pearisburg Fire Dept. will host a public open house on Saturday, October 6th from noon unitl 4pm. There will be face painting, tours, and light refreshments.
