An abundance of recreational opportunities are available to the residents of Radford. Among them are:
- Appalachian Trail - (540) 552-4641 Approximately 170 miles of this famous trail are located in the New River Valley, with 19 shelters available along the way.
- Bisset Park -- (540) 731-3633, A 52-acre municipal park on the scenic New River, located just off Norwood Street in Radford. Jogging trails, tennis courts, swimming pool, play-grounds and picnic shelters. Just across Norwood Street is the entrance to Wildwood Park which celebrated its 70th Anniversary on September 25, 1999. Nature trails. New pathways are underway to connect the trails in Bisset Park to Radford University's Dedmon Center and other points throughout the City of Radford.
- Blue Ridge Parkway - 470 miles of superb mountain scenery; points of interest include Mabry Mill, the oldest working grist mill in the U.S. which has restaurant, gift shop and blacksmith shop.
- Cascades - Located in the Jefferson National Forest; waterfall, hiking trails, picnic areas. Take 460 West to Pembroke and follow signs.
- Chateau Morrisette - (540) 593-2865 A winery located on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Meadows of Dan. Features a restaurant, winery tour and wine tasting's; open 7 days a week.
- Claytor Lake State Park - (540) 674-5492 Claytor Lake is 21 miles long with 108 miles of shore line. Located on State Route 660, off I-81.
- Dedmon Center - (540) 831-5345, A sports and recreational complex located on the Radford University Campus. It boasts a modern air-supported roof.
- Mountain Lake - (540) 626-7171 or 1-800-346-3334, A 250 acre resort and hotel in a beautiful mountain atmosphere. Golf, fishing, tennis, carriage rides, swimming, canoeing.
- The New River - Our nation's oldest river provides some of the best fishing in the State. Boat launch at Riverview park.
- New River Trail State Park - (540) 980-1991, Virginia's newest state park features scenic hiking and biking trails; the Park spans 59 miles and features a trailhead in Pulaski.
- New River Valley Airport - A general aviation airport with Foreign Trade Zone status, located five miles from Radford.
- Radford Recreation Center - (540)731-3633, The purpose of the Radford Parks and Recreation Department is to develop healthy, good citizens through constructive leisure activities. - Radford University - (540) 831-5420, A co-educational University enrolling 9,000 students in undergraduate and selected graduate programs. The University offers numerous cultural and sports events. Located on Route 177, 5 miles off I-81.
- The Radford Senior Center - a variety of programs and trips for learning and enjoyment.
- Smithfield Plantation - (540) 951-2060, Historic Landmark; oldest intact Blacksburg residence; open April through November from Thursday to Sunday; 100 Plantation Road, Blacksburg,VA
- Virginia Tech- Established in 1872, it is the largest school in Virginia, enrolling approximately 23,000 students. Provides year round athletic and cultural events. Located in Blacksburg on Route 460.
- Golf - There are five Golf Courses within 20 miles.
Culture - Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley - (540) 980-7369, The Center offers exhibits of paintings and crafts of regional artists and a gift corner. 21 West Main Street, Pulaski.
- Flossie Martin Gallery - (540) 831-5000, Features on going art exhibits: Radford University; Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
- Glencoe Museum (Cultural Center of Western Virginia's Heritage) - (540) 731-5031 - open Thur - Sat 10am to 4pm & Sun, 1 - 4pm. Located in the restored 1870's home of Brig. Gen. Gabriel Wharton, CSA, son-in-law of Dr. John Blair Radford, for whom the City of Radford is named. Regular and changing exhibits depicting the past of the region's people, their lives, events, history and area industries.
- The Long Way Home - (540) 639-0679, Outdoor drama; a true heroic adventure depicting Mary Draper Ingles' escape from her Shawnee captors through 850 miles of wilderness. Performances will not be given in the summer of 2004. Please check this site in 2004 for dates of performances. Located off I-81, Exit 105 on Route 232.
- Newbern - First county seat of Pulaski; popular historic attraction, Wilderness Road Museum, Located off I-81.
- Radford University Galleries
Cultural Events - The local outdoor drama The Long Way Home offers opportunities for volunteer involvement.
- There are numerous musical and theatrical performances at Radford University.
- The Flossie Martin Gallery is located at Radford University and is open to the public.
- A variety of historic districts, movie theaters, art galleries, and antique shops are located in and around Radford.
- The Radford Heritage Foundation promotes preservation and appreciation of the city's history.
